The finally pushed me over the edge…

Of all the stupid things our government has done, this has got to be close to the top of the list:

They bought 3 luxury jets

After seeing this story, I finally got angry enough to write my congressman for the first time. They pushed my off the edge of indifference. They have unleashed my wrath in the form of a polite letter to an authority figure. God help them.

while i’ve gotta agree that it seems stupid, i don’t know if it’s anywhere near the top of the list. i’d much rather waste some money on a few jets than start a mistake of a war.

I think this is the article Anita mentioned:

    wsj article

It discusses that a total of 8 passenger airplanes in the budget. Some Boeing aircraft were in the proposal that the original articles I read didn’t mention.

The Congressional additions did get cut, but the original Air Force request seems to have been granted:

“A controversial House proposal to double a Pentagon request to buy executive jets for use by government officials died in chorus of opposition that started with the press, spread to the public and ultimately included President Barack Obama.”

The thing that bugs me most is that while they did indeed vote against purchasing these aircraft, there is all this talk about money being “saved”.

Problem being, the $270M is already approved in the budget, and will simply be spent on something else. Thus, this money isn’t actually saved.

When submitting a budget for next year, they are obviously going to request more, because that’s what they do. No agency or department is going to ask for less money than they were given the year before. They aren’t going to say “well, ya know, we saved $270M last year, maybe we don’t need as much as we’ve been asking for.” They are definitely going to spend this, and I’m not going to be the least bit surprised when it’s wasteful. The talk from the politicians claiming how they “saved the American taxpayers $270M” is bogus.
