I bought hand-made pasta and pesto sauces at the market. I thought it was about as good as the stuff in the restaurants. It was definitely the ingredients, not the preparation in that case. I think the shops are closed at midday for a siesta, though I don't think they call it that there. Same concept as Spain though. I would certainly hesitate to label their culture as vain.
