		<description>Yeah, I stayed in an apartment with a kitchen for the week, and I cooked a few times.  I bought hand-made pasta and pesto sauces at the market.  I thought it was about as good as the stuff in the restaurants.  It was definitely the ingredients, not the preparation in that case. 

I think the shops are closed at midday for a siesta, though I don&#039;t think they call it that there.  Same concept as Spain though.  I would certainly hesitate to label their culture as vain.  I think they just tend to place a higher priority on appearances than we do in the US.</description>

		<description>definitely sounds like you had a good time.  it&#039;s kind of funny that you mentioned how it&#039;s no surprise their restaurants make such good food given the quality of the things in the market.  top chef is always saying it&#039;s all about the ingredients, and i guess they weren&#039;t lying.  :)

so out of curiosity, did you get the impression that the italian culture is vain?  or just that they care about aesthetics?  i mean, are the shops closed because the owners are out getting tans or what?</description>
