VTech Tragedy
I feel like we should get something up here about the shootings that took place in Blacksburg, Virginia. My prayers go out to everyone who has been affected by what occurred there yesterday.

Apr 17, 07 at 3:07 pmsame here. it’s just crazy to me that anybody would do something like this.
i had a discussion with a friend of mine yesterday who said the only reason it’s shocking is because it’s so close to home–worse things happen all over the world every day, particularly in africa. in fact, we’ve had more americans day in a single day in iraq.
i don’t think this lessens the tragedy at virginia tech, but it definitely points out the failures of the american media. or, perhaps more appropriately, the fact that americans don’t want news about real world events. for the most part, we’d rather hear about don imus and anna nicole smith. then, we get some sort of dose of moral confirmation about ourselves by feeling sorry for the people of virginia tech.
bear in mind, i DO feel sorry for them, and i hope for the best for the family and friends of those killed or wounded. i’m just saying at the end of the day, most of the country is going to be wondering who’ll get kicked off american idol this week. they won’t be grieving for–or even caring about–the lives lost far from home.
i suppose you could counter by saying war is war and casualties are to be expected. you don’t expected gunmen on university campuses. that’s true, but without wanting to sound callous, i’d say the things that are happening in darfur are probably more tragic by sheer numbers. so shouldn’t we be trying to do something? similarly, pulling out of iraq would prevent quite a few senseless deaths, but what does our government really seem to care?

I guess this kind of backs up what you’re saying Jared. While I don’t really follow Idol, I also don’t really think of Darfur or Iraq unless I see a story or make a conscious effort. It’s a sad state of affairs with America and the media: out of sight, out of mind. I’m ashamed to say that I am in no way the exception to this rule.
