How can this be?

I would love to say that I find this story ridiculous, but I have no trouble believing it. I have long given up on the mainstream news media as they clearly suck. I think this story gives credibility to Jon Stewart’s tyraid on Crossfire in 2004. Check out the video here if you haven’t seen it.

I think the news media has a responsibility to be critical of our leaders to keep them in check, and they are clearly failing at that duty. I like this quote from the story:

“The Daily Show was much funnier, with less of the hype—references to photo ops, political endorsements, and polls—that typically overshadows substantive coverage on network news, according to the study.”

I think that tells it all.

a while ago bill o’reilly made the comment that the only ppl who watched the daily show were potheads, or something like that. comedy central responded by getting an independent survey of the political knowledge held by frequent viewers of the two shows, with the daily show coming out significantly ahead. to my knowledge o’reilly never responded to it, but jon stewart will make comments about it now and again. like you said, it’s pretty ridiculous.

the thing of it is, too, that jon stewart knows how bad it is. he went on crossfire and blasted tucker carlson for not living up to his responsibility as a host of a show on a major news network. carlson tried to say that jon stewart wasn’t doing any better (which we know he is), but stewart made the point that the show that leads into him is puppets making crank phone calls.

it’s pretty sad that these networks don’t report as they should and are critical like they should be. they spend too much time giving us up to the minute details on celebrities and nonsense stories like terry schiavo (sp) and elian gonzalez.

the worst thing of it, though, is a lot of it is brought on by the current administration. would you be critical of the government if karl rove is just going to leak that your wife is an undercover cia agent? i don’t think so. what about if you report on ILLEGAL government wiretaps (ny times), and the white house accuses you of “not being on the right side.” the thing i posted a while ago actually had bush saying that he’ll enforce the patriot act even if it’s not law. wtf? who heard that? nobody. that should be headline news.

it’s getting to the point that it just makes me more depressed than angry. i think a good deal of that comes from the fact that most people just don’t care. to be honest, i think jason would rather the news cover 10 minutes on kiefer sutherland everyday than the white house press conference, or something like that..
