MythTV In Your Eye

Over Christmas break, one of the things I aspired to do was get myself a MythTV box. By that, I mean a computer that would run a program called MythTV for me to act as a glorified TiVo.

I didn’t want to spend a ton of money or anything, though, so that was kind of holding me back. Then, I found out that Kyle had an old computer they weren’t using, and I bought it from him. I got it for $50, put a TV tuner card in there, and setup the software.

It took me a couple tries, but eventually I got everything running the way I wanted it. After I got the myth box setup, I installed Linux on my Xbox and put a frontend on it, so I can watch the shows on my TV. Basically, cable goes to computer, computer records show, Xbox streams show over network from computer, Xbox outputs to TV. It’s really amazing what can be done with an Xbox.

Anyway, it’s awesome, and I’m very proud of it. Heh. It took a lot of work, so I think I have reason to be. Best of all, it’s free unlike a TiVo subscription. Oh, and it skips commercials like the badass it is.
