The State of Our Government

It amazes me to no end what has happened since Bush came into office. I’m not even talking about 9/11, as I don’t really think that can be blamed on him.

We’ve started two wars, neither of which has reached their ultimate goals. We never found Bin Laden and we never found Hussein. On top of that, we’re still losing soldiers in Iraq. I wrote a paper in high school about how I was for the war. That paper, however, was based upon the idea that our president was not flat-out wrong about weapons of mass destruction. We have found no evidence that Iraq was any more of a threat to us than they were since we beat them in the Gulf War. In that case, we were truly fighting an unjust war.

A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense. A president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy. This goes back to those days when Clinton was in trouble. Nobody denies that he lied, but it was nothing compared to starting a fucking war about stuff you lie about. Christ, Clinton’s personal life did NOT affect the country like this war has.

Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy. Providing health care to all Americans is socialism. Speaking of the war… Does it make sense that we’re being so nice to the people we are fighting against and not to the people who are fighting? Nationwide health care is not a reality only because the rich would lose money. Can you honestly say it wouldn’t make our country a better place?

While we’re talking about money, I might as well mention that we’re in the biggest deficit our country has ever faced. We were on track to be out of debt when Clinton was in office. We actually had a budget surplus. So what does Bush do with the money (that Limbaugh claimed the democrats were “making up”…)? He gives it back to the people who need it the least, the upper class. 90% of the tax cuts affected the upper classes. If they’re the upper classes, that means they already ahve money. Does it make sense? Why, of course it does when you’re a Republican. Correct me if I’m wrong, but when you’re in debt, you generally don’t want more debt.

The Patriot Act has recently been expanded. The FBI now has the right to get bank, phone, or internet logs without probably cause or the consent of a judge. All they have to do is claim that it’s part of a terrorist investigation. So-called “terrorists” can be held indefinitely without bail. The actual definition of a terrorist is so lax, it could possibly be applied to those involved in protests.

A woman can’t be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions that affect us all. The RIAA/MPAA are pushing a bill that would exempt them from antitrust laws. Exempt them from laws. Last I heard, nobody was exempt from laws. This idea is ludicrous, but there’s a decent chance it will be passed.

Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you’re a conservative radio host. Then it’s an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery. Rush Limbaugh has made some of the strongest comments against drug users, but once we find out that he’s one of them, he only deserves “treatment” and not jail time for breaking the law. All this, and Republicans still look up to him as some sort of role model. It’s pathetic.

Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which includes banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet. Hm… Downsize the government, you say? Yet, give the power to the corporations and make laws against stuff that, constitutionally, is supposed to be out of the national government’s hands.

Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals. This is related the little blurb above. How anybody can feel so much hate/distaste for gays is far, far, far beyond me. How is it really any different than racism? Making laws against two people doing something that two other people are allowed to do? Sounds like segregation to me.

Anybody feel free to comment. I’d like to point out that some of the first sentences were straight copy+paste from a post by Harriet Nyborg at Slashdot. Also, I realize that not all of this is related to Bush, but in an indirect way, most of the stuff that happens in this country is. Someone has to be held accountable, and the leader is usually that person.

I don’t have as many teeth as I did yesterday

My wisdom teeth are no longer in my mouth. My mouth is numb, big time. On the way home, I was supposed to eat a milkshake. My lower lip was numb, so I couldn’t really keep the milkshake in my mouth, nor could I feel it coming out. That was pretty funny. Then I decided to try to eat something and opened up the blood clot. Now I’m bleeding like a madman.

In related news, I feel that some company should make gauze that actually tastes good, because the crap I’ve got in my mouth now is horrible.

most chips

played some poker last night. first time in quite awhile. jared won the first pot against quint. then him and me were the final two on the second game and we decided to split it. it was late. i won a whole dollar. all for myself. i think jared came out a lot more on top that than. in other ‘me and jared’ news, i’m beating him by 5 in fantasy football, but he has 2 people playing tonight’s game while i have none. maybe tiki and keenan will explode before the game and they can’t get anymore points.

did you hear the sniper got sentenced to death?

How ’bout them refs?

The refs in the Rams vs. Cardinals game were terrible. The Rams were on a comeback drive back in the 4th quarter. The refs decide to review a play that is completely obvious, but then opt not to on close-calls. One of which was a “dropped” ball by Isaac Bruce that sure looked like a catch. The other was a Tory Holt catch which didn’t look like a catch. It looked like he stepped out of bounds. The obvious play was one in which the refs were checking to see if Holt stepped out on a catch, but he took 3 steps first. It wasn’t even close. Then the ref couldn’t remember the rules for overtime when he was explaining them at the coin toss. The refs really didn’t call it very well, but at least their bad calls didn’t favor one team.

Quick Class

All my classes should be like my religion one was today. Go there, take a quiz, and then leave. Oh yeah, turn in your term paper somewhere in there, too. That was awesome. I wasn’t expecting it. Too bad I’ve got one more class today, otherwise I’d be done before break.

more time consumption

jared’s got me all into makin’ my music collection ‘neat’. you know how hard that is going to be? hard. trust me. i probably won’t do it ’til after break. break is not the time for work.

Heard something Funny Today

I heard something very funny today. Lunsford quit math team. That’s hilarious. I’ll bet Nagrodski was super ticked. That’s all I’ve got, just wanted to share my amusement with you.

No Xbox?!

My Xbox controller does not work anymore. The left thumbstick just doesn’t respond. It sucks. I can’t play right now, because it was the only one I had here with me. Too bad those things don’t come with 800-day warranties. I could cash in on that about now. I was checking the net, and I can get a new one for about $17 so that’s not too bad.

while we’re talking about rap…

thanks go to jared for opening my eyes to news.google.com.

so evidently some old eminem rhymes were uncovered and listened to in a press conference today by none other than the Source magazine. there’s a lot of things to say about this. the lyrics, which the article briefs, are about an apparent old gf of slim who is black and how he doesn’t like her since their breakup. the lyrics are elementary, i think, and obviously are racially biased, but hello! aren’t a lot of rappers’ rhymes?

and if you’ve heard “don’t call me marshall”, a cd that we (dks) can’t prove is a real publication, you know the slim hates the source. i’m under the impression this has a lot more to do with some of those tracks getting out to the public than it does with these 10 year old lyrics being influential to a new generation of music listeners.

“oh, and for those of you who don’t know, the source has a white owner” – eminem

Random Music Shiz

The Outkast double cd is awesome. That’s one thing I’m sure of. I’ve got a newfound respect for Outkast. I mean, I never disliked them or anything, but I just didn’t particularly like them either. I do now, though.

The Tupac: Resurrection OST is alright. There’s only a few songs by Tupac (not talking about the soundtrack) that I like, but the ones I do like I like a lot. Changes, Life Goes On, and Hit ‘Em Up are a few. Hit ‘Em Up is kind of funny.

Recently I’ve had an affinity for rap. I’m not exactly sure what it is. My theory is the fact that a lot of it is angry so I can relate with it, being as I’m in school & everything. Everytime I think I’m gonna have a free night or something, some prof decides we’re having a quiz the next day or something. So then I have to study. That’s my theory, at least.

Finals over, time for break

I’m leaving for home tonight right after work. Finals were not that bad, although I made at least one stupid mistake on my calc exam. I’ll be home all next week. Although I have to get my freaking wisdom teeth pulled. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone again. When do you guys get done?

not that many people would care

penny arcade linked to an article at the magicbox that says the whole next final fantasy game is going to be based in the land of Ivalice, the final fantasy tactics world. that’s cool to me, since it’s the only final fantasy game i’ve played since 7. yes, i played 8, but not for the amount of time i’ve played either of the other two.

*laughing*

It looks like Jacko has struck again.

Sleeepy Time

Not really anything new happening w/me right now, minus studying for some biology. Thing is that I actually have the motivation to study, but I’m feeling really sleepy right now…more than usual. Maybe it’ll pass so I can watch tonight’s 24 episode that I missed. Even if it doesn’t, I probably will stay up and watch it anyway. The fact that I stayed up until 3 last night playing topspin probably didnt help things either. At least w/Thanksgiving break coming up I’ll be able to catch up on some sleep and not have to be at school….can’t ask for much more. After Thanksgiving, we’ve only got three weeks of school and then a month off for Christmas, which kicks ass….yay!

Speaking of Topspin, I got it yesterday at Best Buy. Weird thing is it was an impulse buy, which is something I usually don’t do. Me and Jared just stopped by to look around, but then I saw Topspin and Links and wanted to buy both of them really bad for some reason. I ended up only getting Topspin b/c I didnt really feel like spending $100 when I hadn’t planned on spending any at all in the first place. Topspin’s ended up being a pretty good game though, and I’m glad that I bought it. It gives me something else to play besides Madden, which I think I’m coming up on a week of playing time on.
